Problem

A converging meniscus lens is ground from crown glass of refractive index n=1.50n=1.50. Its front surface has radius R1=+15.0 cmR_1=+15.0\ \text{cm} and its back surface has radius R2=+30.0 cmR_2=+30.0\ \text{cm}, under this chapter's sign convention (R>0R>0 when the centre of curvature lies to the right of the vertex). The lens is thin and surrounded by air on both sides. Use the lensmaker's equation 1f=(n−1)(1R1−1R2)\dfrac{1}{f}=(n-1)\left(\dfrac{1}{R_1}-\dfrac{1}{R_2}\right) to find the focal length of the lens in air.
