Problem
A solid glass sphere paperweight of radius 4.0cm and refractive index n=1.50 contains a small trapped air bubble on the axis, 2.0cm (measured through the glass) from the near surface. An observer in air views the bubble along the axis through this near surface only; refraction at the far surface is not involved. Model the near surface as a single spherical refracting surface of radius R=−4.0cm under this chapter's sign convention (its centre of curvature, the centre of the sphere, lies on the bubble's side of the vertex), with the bubble as the object in glass (n1=1.50) and the observer in air (n2=1.00). Find the apparent position of the bubble as seen by the observer, and state whether the image is real or virtual.
