Problem

A thin biconvex lens is ground from glass of index nl=1.60n_l = 1.60, with R1=+15 cmR_1 = +15\,\mathrm{cm} and R2=−15 cmR_2 = -15\,\mathrm{cm} under CV1 (light travels left to right; R>0R>0 when the centre of curvature lies to the right of the vertex). ((a)) Find the focal length of the lens in air (nm=1.00n_m = 1.00). ((b)) The lens is now immersed in a tank of cooking oil of index nm=1.50n_m = 1.50. Find its new focal length.
