Problem

A solar simulator lamp produces a beam in air with irradiance I=500I = 500 W m−2^{-2}. ((a)) Find the electric field amplitude E0E_0 and the magnetic field amplitude B0B_0 of the beam. ((b)) A helium-neon-like beam of vacuum wavelength λ=633\lambda = 633 nm enters a glass of refractive index n=1.52n = 1.52. Find its wavelength, speed and wavenumber inside the glass. ((c)) A sample of the same glass has absorption coefficient α=0.15\alpha = 0.15 m−1^{-1} at this wavelength. What fraction of the irradiance survives after 20 m? ((d)) The glass follows the Cauchy fit n=1.4580+3540 nm2/λ2n = 1.4580 + 3540\ \mathrm{nm}^2/\lambda^2. Find its group index at λ=633\lambda = 633 nm.
