Problem

A fused-silica prism (n=1.46n = 1.46) is cut as a right-angle (45-45-90 degree) prism and surrounded by air (n=1.00n = 1.00). A beam enters perpendicular to one of the short faces, travels through the glass and strikes the hypotenuse at 45.0∘45.0^\circ to its normal. ((a)) Find the critical angle for the glass–air surface. ((b)) State whether the beam undergoes total internal reflection at the hypotenuse, and if so, through what angle the beam is turned.
