Problem

A printed plot shows rsr_s and rpr_p against the angle of incidence θi\theta_i for light going from air (ni=1.00n_i = 1.00) into crown glass (nt=1.50n_t = 1.50), for θi\theta_i from 0∘0^\circ to 90∘90^\circ, using convention CV5. Two points read from the curves: At θi=20∘\theta_i = 20^\circ: rs=−0.22r_s = -0.22, rp=−0.18r_p = -0.18. At θi=70∘\theta_i = 70^\circ: rs=−0.55r_s = -0.55, rp=+0.21r_p = +0.21. ((a)) Find the reflectance Rs\mathcal{R}_s and Rp\mathcal{R}_p at each of the two angles. ((b)) State the sign of each of the four coefficients above. ((c)) Using the sign rule of this chapter, say which of the four reflections (s at 20∘20^\circ, p at 20∘20^\circ, s at 70∘70^\circ, p at 70∘70^\circ) carry a phase change of π\pi (are 'flipped') and which do not.
