Problem

A glass rod of index n=1.50n = 1.50, used as a light guide, is surrounded by air (n=1.00n = 1.00). Light of vacuum wavelength 15501550 nm (a telecommunications wavelength) travelling inside the rod strikes the glass–air boundary at 55.0∘55.0^\circ from the normal. ((a)) Find the critical angle and confirm that 55.0∘55.0^\circ is beyond it. ((b)) Find the penetration depth devd_{\mathrm{ev}} of the evanescent field beyond the surface.
