Problem
Light in air (ni=1.00) strikes the flat glass window of a fish tank filled with water (nt=1.33) at an angle of incidence θi=40.0∘ (treat this as a single air-water interface; ignore the glass). The wave is p-polarised. Follow the same reasoning the chapter used for s-polarisation, but with the roles of E and H exchanged, to derive the Fresnel p-coefficients and check energy conservation. (a) For p-polarisation H lies entirely along the surface (no cosθ factor) while E has a component along the surface that carries a cosθ factor. Write the tangential-H continuity condition, using H0=nE0/(μ0c), as ni(Ei−Er)=ntEt, and the tangential-E continuity condition as (Ei+Er)cosθi=Etcosθt. (These signs are the ones convention CV5 requires; you are not asked to justify the signs, only to use them.) (b) Eliminate Et between the two equations to obtain rp=Er/Ei in terms of ni,nt,θi,θt. (c) Substitute back to obtain tp=Et/Ei. (d) Using Snell's law, evaluate θt, then rp and tp numerically to three significant figures for this interface. (e) Compute Rp=rp2 and Tp=nicosθintcosθttp2, and verify that Rp+Tp=1 to within rounding.
