Problem

(a) Unpolarised light of irradiance I0=100 W m−2I_0 = 100\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}} falls on three ideal linear polarising sheets in series, with transmission axes at 0∘0^\circ, 60∘60^\circ and 90∘90^\circ to a fixed reference direction. Find the irradiance transmitted by the third sheet. (b) A beam has field components Ex=2E_x = 2 (arbitrary units) along xx and Ey=1E_y = 1 along yy, with the yy component delayed by a quarter cycle (ε=π/2\varepsilon = \pi/2) relative to xx. Write its normalised Jones vector under the book's conventions (CV3, CV6). (c) Six irradiance measurements on a beam give I0∘=0.6 W m−2I_{0^\circ}=0.6\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, I90∘=0.2 W m−2I_{90^\circ}=0.2\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, I45∘=0.3 W m−2I_{45^\circ}=0.3\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, I135∘=0.5 W m−2I_{135^\circ}=0.5\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, IR=0.35 W m−2I_R=0.35\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, IL=0.45 W m−2I_L=0.45\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}. Find the four Stokes parameters (under CV7) and the degree of polarisation.
