Problem

(a) A laser beam of irradiance I0=80 W m−2I_0 = 80\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, linearly polarised along 0∘0^\circ, passes through three ideal linear polarising sheets with axes at 0∘0^\circ, 30∘30^\circ and 90∘90^\circ in that order. Find the irradiance leaving the third sheet. (b) A beam has equal field amplitudes Ex=Ey=1E_x = E_y = 1 unit, with the yy component delayed by a sixth of a cycle (ε=π/3\varepsilon = \pi/3) relative to xx. Write its normalised Jones vector. (c) Six irradiance measurements on a beam give I0∘=0.9 W m−2I_{0^\circ}=0.9\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, I90∘=0.3 W m−2I_{90^\circ}=0.3\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, I45∘=0.7 W m−2I_{45^\circ}=0.7\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, I135∘=0.5 W m−2I_{135^\circ}=0.5\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, IR=0.55 W m−2I_R=0.55\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, IL=0.65 W m−2I_L=0.65\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}. Find the Stokes parameters and the degree of polarisation.
