Problem

(a) A beam of irradiance I0=50 W m−2I_0 = 50\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, linearly polarised along 0∘0^\circ, passes through three ideal linear polarising sheets with axes at 25∘25^\circ, 65∘65^\circ and 90∘90^\circ in that order. Find the irradiance leaving the third sheet. (b) A beam has field components Ex=1E_x=1 unit and Ey=2E_y=2 units, with the yy component advanced by a quarter cycle (ε=−π/2\varepsilon=-\pi/2) relative to xx. Write its normalised Jones vector. (c) Six irradiance measurements on a beam give I0∘=0.55 W m−2I_{0^\circ}=0.55\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, I90∘=0.25 W m−2I_{90^\circ}=0.25\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, I45∘=0.45 W m−2I_{45^\circ}=0.45\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, I135∘=0.35 W m−2I_{135^\circ}=0.35\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, IR=0.3 W m−2I_R=0.3\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}, IL=0.5 W m−2I_L=0.5\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}. Find the Stokes parameters and the degree of polarisation.
