Problem
Unpolarised light of irradiance I0 passes through: an ideal linear polariser at 0 degrees, then an ideal retarder of retardance Γ=π with its fast axis at 22.5 degrees, then a second ideal linear polariser at 45 degrees. Find the transmitted irradiance as a fraction of I0, and comment on whether the retarder causes any loss.
