Problem

Three short calculations, each using data already given in the chapter. ((a)) Quartz has no=1.544n_o = 1.544 and ne=1.553n_e = 1.553 at 589 nm. Find the extraordinary index n(θ)n(\theta) for a wave travelling at θ=60∘\theta = 60^\circ to the optic axis. ((b)) A He-Ne laser beam (λ=632.8\lambda = 632.8 nm) is to pass through a zero-order quarter-wave plate cut from calcite, with no=1.658n_o = 1.658 and ne=1.486n_e = 1.486. Find the plate thickness dd. ((c)) A glucose solution with specific rotation [α]D=52.7∘ dm−1 (g mL−1)−1[\alpha]_D = 52.7^\circ\,\text{dm}^{-1}\,(\text{g mL}^{-1})^{-1} is made up at a mass concentration ρs=0.15 g mL−1\rho_s = 0.15\ \text{g mL}^{-1} and placed in a polarimeter tube of length ℓ=1\ell = 1 dm. Find the rotation of the plane of polarisation.
