Problem

Three short calculations, each using data already given in the chapter. ((a)) Calcite has no=1.658n_o = 1.658 and ne=1.486n_e = 1.486 at 589 nm. Find the extraordinary index n(θ)n(\theta) for a wave travelling at θ=30∘\theta = 30^\circ to the optic axis. ((b)) Find the thickness dd of a zero-order quarter-wave plate made from mica (∣ne−no∣≈0.005|n_e - n_o| \approx 0.005) for light of wavelength λ=589\lambda = 589 nm. ((c)) A sucrose solution with specific rotation [α]D=66.5∘ dm−1 (g mL−1)−1[\alpha]_D = 66.5^\circ\,\text{dm}^{-1}\,(\text{g mL}^{-1})^{-1} is made up at a mass concentration ρs=0.08 g mL−1\rho_s = 0.08\ \text{g mL}^{-1} and placed in a polarimeter tube of length ℓ=1.5\ell = 1.5 dm. Find the rotation of the plane of polarisation.
