Problem

A positively charged particle produced in a fixed-target experiment has momentum p=600 MeV/cp = 600\,\mathrm{MeV}/c, from the curvature of its track, and speed β=0.450\beta = 0.450, from the ionisation density along the track. Many such tracks, all at this momentum, end in a decay after a mean distance of L=1.21 cmL = 1.21\,\mathrm{cm} in the laboratory. ((a)) Find the particle's rest mass mm, and identify it from these candidates: K+K^+ (493.7 MeV/c2493.7\,\mathrm{MeV}/c^2), proton (938.3 MeV/c2938.3\,\mathrm{MeV}/c^2), Σ+\Sigma^+ (1189.4 MeV/c21189.4\,\mathrm{MeV}/c^2). ((b)) Find its mean lifetime τ\tau in its own rest frame. ((c)) State which fundamental interaction is responsible for the decay.
