Problem
A beam of negative pions of momentum 0.90GeV/c strikes protons at rest. Two reactions are proposed: π−+p→K++?, where the missing particle is a single baryon, and π−+p→K++n. Use mπ−c2=139.6MeV, mpc2=938.3MeV, mK+c2=493.7MeV (K+=usˉ) and the baryons given in the data below. Data (particle: content, Q, S, mass in MeV/c2): n: udd, 0, 0, 939.6; Λ: uds, 0, −1, 1115.7; Σ+: uus, +1, −1, 1189.4; Σ−: dds, −1, −1, 1197.4; Ξ−: dss, −1, −2, 1321.7.
((a)) Test π−+p→K++n against charge, baryon number and strangeness, and give its verdict.
((b)) Find the charge, baryon number and strangeness the missing baryon in π−+p→K++? must carry, and name it from the table.
((c)) Say which interaction can produce the completed reaction of part (b), with a reason.
((d)) Using the fixed-target relation of Chapter 2, find s at this beam momentum and the minimum beam momentum for the completed reaction. Say whether, at 0.90GeV/c, it is forbidden, below threshold or able to run, and what would change the verdict for each of the two reactions.
