Particle Physics, Ch Isospin: a symmetry used as bookkeeping
Problem
The Ξ0 baryon has quark content uss and baryon number B=1. It belongs, with Ξ−, to a family of two states of equal spin and nearly equal mass.
((a)) Compute I3 for the Ξ0 from its quark content.
((b)) Compute the strangeness S and hence the hypercharge Y=B+S.
((c)) State the isospin I of the Ξ family from its number of members.
((d)) Check that Q=I3+Y/2 reproduces the known charge of the Ξ0, Q=0.
