Particle Physics, Ch Isospin: a symmetry used as bookkeeping
Problem
The K0 meson has quark content dsˉ and baryon number B=0. It belongs, with K+, to a doublet of equal spin and nearly equal mass.
((a)) Compute I3 for the K0 from its quark content.
((b)) Compute the strangeness S (minus the number of s quarks, plus the number of sˉ quarks) and hence the hypercharge Y=B+S.
((c)) State the isospin I of the kaon doublet from its number of members.
((d)) Check that Q=I3+Y/2 reproduces the known charge of the K0, Q=0.
