Problem

The meson b1(1235)b_1(1235) has JP=1+J^P = 1^+. Suppose someone proposes that it decays strongly into π+π−\pi^+\pi^- (this mode has never been observed; b1(1235)b_1(1235) is seen only to decay to ωπ\omega\pi). Each pion has intrinsic parity P(π)=−1P(\pi) = -1 and spin 00. ((a)) Find the orbital angular momentum LL that the proposed two-pion final state would need to carry the parent's spin. ((b)) Compute the total parity of that final state and decide whether the proposed decay is allowed by parity. Comment on whether this is consistent with the mode never being seen.
