Problem

A future upgrade of a large hadron collider is designed to run at an instantaneous luminosity L=5×1034 cm−2 s−1\mathcal{L} = 5\times10^{34}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}, using nb=2760n_{\rm b} = 2760 bunches per beam circulating at a revolution frequency frev=11245 Hzf_{\rm rev} = 11245\,\mathrm{Hz}. The total inelastic proton-proton cross section at this energy is about σinel=80 mb\sigma_{\rm inel} = 80\,\mathrm{mb}. Estimate the mean number of inelastic interactions produced at every bunch crossing (the pile-up).
