Problem

A proposed electron-positron flavour factory would run at low beam energy (a few GeV\mathrm{GeV} per beam) with an instantaneous luminosity L=8×1035 cm−2 s−1\mathcal{L} = 8\times10^{35}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}, and would collect data for a total of 1×107 s1\times10^{7}\,\mathrm{s} each year once downtime is accounted for. ((a)) Express the integrated luminosity collected in one year in fb−1\mathrm{fb^{-1}}. ((b)) A process of interest has cross section σ=1.1 nb\sigma = 1.1\,\mathrm{nb}. Estimate how many such events are produced in one year of running. ((c)) State briefly, referring to the E4/rE^4/r scaling of synchrotron radiation, why radiation loss is not the limiting factor for a ring running at only a few GeV\mathrm{GeV} per beam.
