Problem

A horizontal linear plasma device confines singly ionised argon ions (Ar+\mathrm{Ar^+}, mass number 4040) of density n=1.0×1018 m−3n = 1.0\times10^{18}\,\mathrm{m^{-3}} in a horizontal field B=0.10 TB = 0.10\,\mathrm{T}. Ordinary laboratory gravity g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} acts vertically downward on the ions. ((a)) Find the magnitude of the gravitational drift of the Ar+\mathrm{Ar^+} ions. ((b)) Find the magnitude of the current density this drift produces, treating the electron contribution as negligible.
