Problem

A proton of kinetic energy 300 keV300\,\mathrm{keV} moves (nearly) perpendicular to the field on the Earth's L=5L = 5 dipole shell, at equatorial distance r=5REr = 5R_E from the centre, where RE=6371 kmR_E = 6371\,\mathrm{km}. On a dipole shell labelled LL the equatorial field strength is B=B0/L3B = B_0/L^3 with B0=3.12×10−5 TB_0 = 3.12\times10^{-5}\,\mathrm{T}, and the field-scale length is LB=r/3L_B = r/3. ((a)) Find the equatorial field BB on this shell and the proton's Larmor radius rLr_L. ((b)) Find LBL_B and the ratio ϵ=rL/LB\epsilon = r_L/L_B. ((c)) State, giving the reason, whether the guiding-centre ordering is satisfied for this proton.
