Problem

A magnetised helium plasma column carries a bi-Maxwellian ion distribution with density ni=5×1018 m−3n_i = 5\times10^{18}\,\mathrm{m^{-3}}, parallel temperature Ti∥=3 eVT_{i\parallel} = 3\,\mathrm{eV} and perpendicular temperature Ti⊥=9 eVT_{i\perp} = 9\,\mathrm{eV}. ((a)) Find p∥=niTi∥p_\parallel = n_iT_{i\parallel} and p⊥=niTi⊥p_\perp = n_iT_{i\perp} in pascals. ((b)) Find the scalar pressure p=(p∥+2p⊥)/3p = (p_\parallel + 2p_\perp)/3 that a single-fluid model with an isotropic closure would use.
