Problem

A cylindrical laboratory plasma column has an electron temperature Te=5 eVT_e = 5\,\mathrm{eV}, a density gradient scale length Ln=3 cmL_n = 3\,\mathrm{cm}, a uniform axial field B=0.4 TB = 0.4\,\mathrm{T} and electron density ne=1×1019 m−3n_e = 1\times10^{19}\,\mathrm{m^{-3}}. ((a)) Find the magnitude of the electron diamagnetic drift speed u∗e=Te/(eBLn)u_{*e} = T_e/(eBL_n). ((b)) Find the magnitude of the associated electron diamagnetic current density, j∗e=eneu∗ej_{*e} = en_eu_{*e}.
