Problem

A large circular tokamak has major radius R0=2.9 mR_0 = 2.9\,\mathrm{m}, minor radius a=0.90 ma = 0.90\,\mathrm{m}, toroidal field B0=3.4 TB_0 = 3.4\,\mathrm{T}, deuterium ions (mi=2mpm_i = 2m_p) with Ti=Te=3.0 keVT_i = T_e = 3.0\,\mathrm{keV}, density ni=ne=3.0×1019 m−3n_i = n_e = 3.0\times10^{19}\,\mathrm{m^{-3}}, and outboard pressure scale length Lp=0.50 mL_p = 0.50\,\mathrm{m}. ((a)) Take the outboard midplane as unshielded, with curvature radius Rc=R0R_c = R_0. Using the curvature-drift picture (curvature acting as an effective outward gravity), estimate the interchange growth rate γ≈(Ti/miRcLp)1/2\gamma \approx \left(T_i/m_iR_cL_p\right)^{1/2} and its e-folding time. ((b)) The resistivity at the q=2q = 2 surface is η=5.0×10−9 Ω m\eta = 5.0\times10^{-9}\,\Omega\,\mathrm{m}. Form the Alfven speed and Alfven time from B0B_0, aa and ni,min_i,m_i, take the resistive diffusion time over the minor radius aa, compute the Lundquist number SS, and estimate the tearing growth time from γτA∼S−3/5\gamma\tau_A \sim S^{-3/5} with Δ′a\Delta'a of order unity.
