Problem

A magnetised laboratory plasma has electron density ne=5.0×1018 m−3n_e = 5.0\times10^{18}\,\mathrm{m^{-3}} in a uniform field B0=0.10 TB_0 = 0.10\,\mathrm{T}. Treat the ions as making a negligible contribution to RR and LL near these frequencies. ((a)) Calculate the electron plasma frequency fpef_{pe} and electron cyclotron frequency fcef_{ce}. ((b)) Calculate the cutoff frequencies fRf_R and fLf_L of the parallel R and L waves. ((c)) State how fpef_{pe} compares in size with fRf_R and fLf_L.
