Problem

A deuterium tokamak plasma has electron density ne=5.0×1019 m−3n_e = 5.0\times10^{19}\,\mathrm{m^{-3}} in a field B0=3.0 TB_0 = 3.0\,\mathrm{T}, with deuteron mass mD=2mpm_D = 2m_p (mpm_p the proton mass). Neglecting the ion terms except where they set the lower hybrid frequency, calculate: ((a)) the upper hybrid frequency fUH=(fpe2+fce2)1/2f_{UH} = (f_{pe}^2 + f_{ce}^2)^{1/2}; ((b)) the lower hybrid frequency fLHf_{LH} from 1/fLH2=1/(fci2+fpi2)+1/(fcifce)1/f_{LH}^2 = 1/(f_{ci}^2+f_{pi}^2) + 1/(f_{ci}f_{ce}), where fcif_{ci} and fpif_{pi} are the deuteron cyclotron and plasma frequencies.
