Problem
Cold argon ions (mi=39.95u, charge +e) sit in a uniform field B0z^, with Boltzmann electrons of temperature Te maintaining quasineutrality along B0. A wave has k almost across B0 (write k for its perpendicular magnitude) with a small parallel component that lets the electrons equilibrate along the field.
((a)) Starting from the linearised ion equation of motion miu˙i=e(E+ui×B0) for the perpendicular components, the ion continuity equation, and quasineutrality with the electron Boltzmann relation, derive ω2=Ωi2+k2cs2,cs2=Te/mi,Ωi=eB0/mi.
((b)) Evaluate ω and f=ω/2π for argon with B0=0.15T, Te=3.0eV and k=135m−1, and compare with Ωi/2π.
