Problem
These three parts check warm results against cold-plasma tools from earlier chapters.
((a)) The cold unmagnetised dielectric function P(ω)=1−ωpe2/ω2 gives the parallel electrostatic resonance P=0 at ω=ωpe. Using the one-dimensional adiabatic closure (γe=3, valid because the wave moves faster than a typical electron), state how this frequency is modified at finite k, and evaluate ω/ωpe for kλDe=0.25.
((b)) The cold magnetised function S(ω) has a resonance at S=0; in the limit ωpe≫∣Ωe∣ this becomes the lower hybrid frequency ωLH2≈Ωi∣Ωe∣. For deuterium ions (mi=2.014u) in B0=0.5T with ne=1.0×1020m−3, check that ωpe≫∣Ωe∣ holds and evaluate fLH=ωLH/2π.
((c)) The cold magnetised compressional (fast) wave travels at vA for k⊥B0. Show algebraically that the warm fast magnetosonic speed at θ=90∘, vfast(90∘)=(vA2+cs2)1/2, reduces to vA as β→0, and evaluate vA for the same deuterium plasma as in part (b).
