Plasma Physics, Ch Waves that need pressure or tension: Langmuir, ion-acoustic, Alfven and magnetosonic
Problem
A deuterium plasma has B0=3T, ne=ni=1×1019m−3 and Te=Ti=100eV. Take the deuteron mass as mi=3.343×10−27kg and the single-fluid adiabatic index γad=5/3.
((a)) The one-dimensional adiabatic closure used for the electrons in the Bohm-Gross wave sets γe from the number of degrees of freedom N that take part in the compression, through γ=(N+2)/N (the ideal-gas rule for the adiabatic index in terms of N). State which value of N is appropriate for a plane electron-density wave, use the formula to recover γe=3, and give, in terms of ω/k and vte, the condition on the wave's phase speed that makes this one-dimensional treatment sensible.
((b)) For the plasma above, compute the plasma beta β=2μ0p/B02 with p=neTe+niTi, the Alfven speed vA, and the sound speed cs=(2γadT/mi)1/2 (using T=Te=Ti). Hence evaluate the fast magnetosonic speed at θ=90∘ (propagation exactly across B0), vf=(vA2+cs2)1/2, and give the fractional amount by which it exceeds vA. State which wave of Chapter 9's cold-plasma theory this low-β, perpendicular fast wave reduces to, and why the cold theory could not have produced the correction you found.
