Problem
The continued kinetic dielectric function for electrostatic waves in an unmagnetised plasma can be split, via the Plemelj formula, into ϵ(k,ω)=ϵr(k,ω)+iϵi(k,ω), with ϵi coming from the residue at the pole on the Landau contour. Suppose a root of ϵ(k,ω)=0 has ω=ωr+iγ with ∣γ∣≪ωr, and that near ωr, ∣ϵi∣≪∣ϵr∣.
((a)) By Taylor-expanding ϵ(k,ωr+iγ)=0 to first order in γ (treating ϵi itself as already small, so a term γ∂ϵi/∂ω can be dropped), show that γ=−∂ϵr/∂ωωrϵi(k,ωr).
((b)) For a single electron species with ϵi(k,ω)=−π(ωpe2/k2)f^0e′(ω/k) and, near ωr≈ωpe, the cold-fluid approximation ϵr≈1−ωpe2/ω2, show that γ≈2πk2ωpe3f^0e′(ωpe/k).
