Problem
A first pulse of wavenumber k1=100m−1 at t=0 leaves a density ripple ∝f^0(v)cos(k1x) in a Maxwellian electron plasma with vte=1.0×106ms−1. A second pulse of wavenumber k2=150m−1 follows at τ=1.0μs. Treat the electrons as streaming freely between and after the pulses, and take as given that just after the second pulse the part of the perturbation that can echo is Cf^0(v)cos[(k1−k2)x−k1vτ], with C a constant. Use ∫f^0(v)cos(αv)dv=e−α2vte2/2.
((a)) Show that the first pulse's own density falls by a factor e within a time 2/(k1vte), and evaluate it.
((b)) Let the echo term stream freely after τ. Show that its density is ∝cos[(k1−k2)x]exp[−(k2−k1)2vte2(t−techo)2/2] with techo=k2τ/(k2−k1).
((c)) Evaluate techo and the time on either side of it within which the echo is above 1/e of its peak, and say why no echo follows the second pulse if k2<k1.
