Problem
A qubit A is coupled unitarily to a second qubit E (an environment qubit initially prepared in ∣0⟩) by the two-qubit unitary U defined by U∣0⟩A∣0⟩E=∣0⟩A∣0⟩E,U∣1⟩A∣0⟩E=∣1⟩A(cos2θ∣0⟩E+sin2θ∣1⟩E), with θ=π/2: if A is ∣0⟩, E is left alone; if A is ∣1⟩, E is rotated away from ∣0⟩ by angle θ. Immediately afterwards E is discarded (traced out).
((a)) Using Kk=⟨ek∣U∣e0⟩ with {∣ek⟩}={∣0⟩E,∣1⟩E} and ∣e0⟩=∣0⟩E, write the two operators K0, K1 for θ=π/2 as 2×2 matrices in the {∣0⟩,∣1⟩} basis of A, and check K0†K0+K1†K1=I.
((b)) Qubit A starts in ∣+⟩. Compute ρA′=K0ρAK0†+K1ρAK1† with ρA=∣+⟩⟨+∣, and give the resulting Bloch vector.
((c)) State in one sentence what has happened to the coherence of A, and compare with the CNOT-onto-environment case, where the off-diagonal entries are erased completely.
