Quantum Information and Technology, Ch What a qubit must do: requirements, tomography and benchmarking
Problem
A laboratory plans full process tomography of a two-qubit gate using the input-state form: 16 input states and 9 measurement settings per input give 144 experimental configurations. Each configuration must be repeated enough times that its measured Pauli expectation value has a statistical standard error no larger than 0.02, using the conservative estimate that the standard error after N shots is 1/N.
((a)) Estimate the number of shots N needed per configuration, and hence the total number of shots for the whole two-qubit process tomography.
((b)) If the apparatus can run 1000 shots per second (including qubit reset and gate application time), estimate the total run time for the two-qubit case, and again for a three-qubit gate, which needs 1728 configurations. Comment on whether either is practical within an 8-hour working day.
