Problem
The two Josephson relations are I=Icsinφ and V=2eℏdtdφ, with φ the gauge-invariant phase difference across the junction and Ic its critical current.
((a)) Using V=LJdI/dt for an inductor, derive the phase-dependent Josephson inductance LJ(φ).
((b)) Using dE/dt=IV, derive the junction's potential energy −EJcosφ (up to an additive constant) and identify EJ in terms of Ic.
((c)) A symmetric split junction (two identical junctions of critical current Ic0, joined into a loop threaded by an external flux Φ, so that the pair behaves as one effective junction of critical current Ic(Φ)=Ic∣cos(πΦ/Φ0)∣, with Ic=2Ic0=30.0nA its value at zero flux and Φ0=h/2e the flux quantum) is biased at Φ=Φ0/3. Using ℏ=1.0546×10−34Js, h=6.6261×10−34Js and e=1.6022×10−19C, find the effective critical current at Φ=Φ0/3, and hence EJ/h and LJ(0) there (still ℏ/2eIc(Φ), the linear inductance of the effective junction at zero phase). Then, for a transmon built on this split junction with EC/h=0.250GHz fixed and f01≈8EJEC/h−EC/h, find f01 at zero flux and at Φ=Φ0/3.
