Problem
Chapter 9 built the spin operators S^x=2ℏσx, S^y=2ℏσy, S^z=2ℏσz, withσx=(0110),σy=(0i−i0),σz=(100−1),and found the eigenvectors of S^x to be χ±(x)=21(1,±1)T, with eigenvalues ±ℏ/2. Cycling x→y→z→x through the relation [S^x,S^y]=iℏS^z, which this chapter's argument gives for spin exactly as it does for the orbital operators, produces [S^y,S^z]=iℏS^x; Chapter 8 supplies the generalised uncertainty relation ΔAΔB≥21∣⟨[A^,B^]⟩∣.An electron is prepared in χ+(x)=21(1,1)T, the eigenstate of S^x with eigenvalue +ℏ/2.
((a)) Using the matrices σy and σz, compute ⟨Sy⟩ and ⟨Sz⟩ in this state.
((b)) Using the eigenvalue of S^x in this state, give the bound the uncertainty relation places on ΔSyΔSz, as a multiple of ℏ2.
((c)) Using σy2=σz2=1 (Chapter 9), compute ΔSy and ΔSz directly, as multiples of ℏ, and say whether the bound of (b) is reached.
((d)) χ+(x) plays, for the axis x, the role the top rung ml=l plays for the axis z in the orbital ladder. In one sentence, say what property of a top rung this parallel rests on.
