Problem

The 2p2p radial function of hydrogen (n=2n=2, l=1l=1) is R21(r)=124a03 ra0 e−r/2a0,R_{21}(r) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{24a_0^3}}\,\frac{r}{a_0}\,e^{-r/2a_0}, with a0=0.0529a_0 = 0.0529 nm. The proton is fixed, the electron is non-relativistic and spin is ignored. You may use ∫0∞xqe−xdx=q!\int_0^\infty x^qe^{-x}dx = q! for integer q≥0q \ge 0. ((a)) Show that u=rR21u=rR_{21} has the two forms the chapter's asymptotic analysis requires: u∝rl+1u \propto r^{l+1} as r→0r\to0, and e−ρe^{-\rho} decay at large ρ=κr\rho = \kappa r with κ=1/(na0)\kappa = 1/(na_0); identify nn and ll from the power of rr and the exponential. ((b)) Verify that R21R_{21} is normalised, ∫0∞∣R21∣2r2dr=1\int_0^\infty |R_{21}|^2r^2dr = 1. ((c)) Derive the mean radius ⟨r⟩=∫0∞rP(r) dr\langle r\rangle = \int_0^\infty rP(r)\,dr with P(r)=∣R21∣2r2P(r) = |R_{21}|^2r^2, and give it as a multiple of a0a_0 and in nm.
