Problem

A cadmium lamp line is measured in air at λair=643.847 nm\lambda_{\rm air} = 643.847\,\mathrm{nm}. Use the vacuum correction λvac=1.000274 λair\lambda_{\rm vac} = 1.000274\,\lambda_{\rm air} (the factor fixed from Hα\alpha). ((a)) Find the vacuum wavelength in nm, to five significant figures where the data allow. ((b)) Find the wavenumber ν~\tilde\nu in cm−1\mathrm{cm^{-1}}.
