Problem

Three sets of states of atomic hydrogen carry the spectroscopic labels 4f4f, 3d3d and 5p5p. Spin is not included. ((a)) For each label, give nn and ll, and the number of states the label covers. ((b)) State the lowest nn at which a d label can occur, and the lowest at which an f label can occur. ((c)) Explain why no hydrogen level is labelled 2d2d.
