Problem

Apply the Rydberg scaling laws to a hydrogen atom excited to n=30n=30 (rather than the worked n=50n=50 example). Take a0=0.052918 nma_0 = 0.052918\,\mathrm{nm}, hcRH=13.606 eVhcR_{\rm H} = 13.606\,\mathrm{eV}, RH=109677.58 cm−1R_{\rm H} = 109677.58\,\mathrm{cm^{-1}}, and the nuclear-field estimate for the ionising field Fion=5.14×109/n4 V cm−1F_{\rm ion} = 5.14\times10^9/n^4\,\mathrm{V\,cm^{-1}}. ((a)) Compute the mean radius ⟨r⟩\langle r\rangle for l=29l=29 (the circular, highest-ll orbit) and for l=0l=0, using ⟨r⟩=a02[3n2−l(l+1)]\langle r\rangle = \tfrac{a_0}{2}[3n^2-l(l+1)]. ((b)) Compute the binding energy of the n=30n=30 level. ((c)) Estimate the wavenumber spacing to n=31n=31 using 2hcRH/n32hcR_{\rm H}/n^3 (treating nn as continuous), and compare it (as a frequency in GHz) with the exact interval hcRH(1/302−1/312)hcR_{\rm H}(1/30^2-1/31^2). ((d)) Evaluate the nuclear-field estimate FionF_{\rm ion} for this state. (It fixes the n−4n^{-4} power, not the measured ionising field.)
