Problem

Consider a hypothetical one-electron atom in which the electron has no spin, so that the only magnetic moment is the orbital one. A spectral line at λ=500.0 nm\lambda = 500.0\,\mathrm{nm}, from a d→pd \to p transition, is observed with the atom in a uniform field B=2.0 TB = 2.0\,\mathrm{T} along z^\hat z. ((a)) State how many distinct line positions the normal Zeeman effect predicts, and name the polarisation of each component (i) viewed across the field and (ii) viewed along the field. ((b)) Calculate the wavelength separation Δλ\Delta\lambda between adjacent components.
