Problem

(a) A laboratory electromagnet produces a uniform field B=2.2 TB = 2.2\,\mathrm{T}. Calculate the orbital-moment energy μBB\mu_{\rm B}B in eV, in GHz (as μBB/h\mu_{\rm B}B/h) and in cm−1\mathrm{cm^{-1}} (as μBB/hc\mu_{\rm B}B/hc). (b) In a separate experiment, the two σ\sigma components of the sodium D1 line (589.6 nm589.6\,\mathrm{nm}, 2P1/2→2S1/2^2\mathrm{P}_{1/2} \to {}^2\mathrm{S}_{1/2}) are observed to be 0.75 cm−10.75\,\mathrm{cm^{-1}} apart. Each σ\sigma component lies 43μBB/hc\tfrac43\mu_{\rm B}B/hc from the unshifted line position. Find the field BB that produced this splitting.
