Problem

An excited level of a free atom is labelled 2D5/2^2\mathrm{D}_{5/2}, so L=2L=2, S=12S=\tfrac12, J=52J=\tfrac52. ((a)) Use the Lande formula to compute gJg_J for this level, and compare it with the tabulated value gJ=1.2003g_J = 1.2003 (NIST ASD). ((b)) In a field B=0.60 TB = 0.60\,\mathrm{T}, find the energy spacing in cm−1\mathrm{cm^{-1}} between adjacent mJm_J sublevels of this level. ((c)) Find the total energy spread, in cm−1\mathrm{cm^{-1}}, between the extreme sublevels (mJ=+52m_J = +\tfrac52 and mJ=−52m_J = -\tfrac52).
