Problem

The calcium resonance line at 422.7 nm422.7\,\mathrm{nm} is emitted in the transition 4p 1P1→4s 1S04\mathrm{p}\,{}^1\mathrm{P}_1 \to 4\mathrm{s}\,{}^1\mathrm{S}_0: in both levels the spins of calcium's two outer electrons cancel, so the levels carry no net spin moment, J=LJ = L for each, and the normal Zeeman pattern applies exactly. A field B=1.5 TB = 1.5\,\mathrm{T} is applied. ((a)) Predict the number of distinct line positions seen (i) viewing across the field and (ii) viewing along the field. ((b)) Calculate the wavelength separation Δλ\Delta\lambda between each outer component and the unshifted line, using Δλ=λ2Δν~\Delta\lambda = \lambda^2\Delta\tilde\nu.
