Problem

The fundamental vibrational absorption of gaseous carbon monoxide, 12C16O\mathrm{^{12}C^{16}O}, has vibrational constant ωe=2169.8 cm−1\omega_e = 2169.8\,\mathrm{cm^{-1}}. Using atomic masses m(12C)=12.0000 um(\mathrm{^{12}C}) = 12.0000\,\mathrm u and m(16O)=15.9949 um(\mathrm{^{16}O}) = 15.9949\,\mathrm u, find ((a)) the force constant kk of the C-O bond, treating V(R)V(R) as a parabola near its minimum; ((b)) the energy of its lowest vibrational level above the bottom of the potential curve, in eV.
