Reading the Spectrum, Ch Two nuclei on one curve: rotation, vibration and the spectrum of a diatomic molecule
Problem
Six diatomic molecules are listed below with their permanent electric dipole moment (a value of zero means the molecule is homonuclear, made of two identical atoms): H2 (dipole 0), HCl (dipole 1.11D), N2 (dipole 0), CO (dipole 0.11D), O2 (dipole 0), NO (dipole 0.16D).
((a)) For each molecule, state whether it shows an infrared rotational-vibrational absorption band, giving the reason in one sentence.
((b)) For any molecule you say shows no band, state whether this is because the molecule does not vibrate or rotate, or because it does both but the process produces no oscillating dipole.
