Problem
The two lines nearest the centre of the fundamental band of H35Cl are measured at P(1)=2865.10cm−1 and R(0)=2906.25cm−1 (HITRAN2016). Each has a weaker partner from H37Cl just below it. Take μ=0.97959u for H35Cl and 0.98108u for H37Cl, and ωexe=52.8cm−1 from the overtone.
((a)) Treating the band with one rotational constant, find ν~0 and B from the two lines.
((b)) Find the bond length this B implies. It comes out longer than the R0=128.4pm found from B0=10.44cm−1; say why.
((c)) Find ωe from ν~0=ωe−2ωexe, and the force constant k.
((d)) Predict where the H37Cl partner of R(0) falls, scaling ωe as μ−1/2 and both ωexe and B as μ−1, and find how far apart the pair is.
((e)) A grating with 150 grooves per millimetre is used in first order. How many grooves must be illuminated to separate the pair, and how wide a strip of grating is that?
