Problem

In the inertial frame SS of a deep-space station, craft AA moves at 0.600c0.600c in the +x+x direction and craft BB moves at 0.700c0.700c in the −x-x direction, so the two approach head on along the xx axis. The rest frame S′S' of craft AA is in standard configuration with SS at v=0.600cv = 0.600c. Take c=2.998×108 m s−1c = 2.998\times10^8\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. ((a)) Craft BB sends a radio pulse towards AA. Predict the speed of that pulse as measured by the crew of AA, and give the number in m s−1\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. ((b)) Predict whether the crew of AA measures craft BB approaching at more or less than 1.300c1.300c, then compute the speed of BB in frame S′S', in m s−1\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}.
