Problem

A pion in a beam line moves at the constant speed 0.900c0.900c along the +x+x axis of the laboratory frame SS, with c=2.998×108 m s−1c = 2.998\times 10^{8}\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. Its rest frame S′S' is in standard configuration with SS. Gravity is ignored and the light travels in vacuum. ((a)) Find the rapidity ψ\psi of S′S' relative to SS. ((b)) Write the four-velocity U\mathbf{U} of the pion in SS, each component as a multiple of cc, and evaluate U⋅U\mathbf{U}\cdot\mathbf{U}. ((c)) A tiny transmitter carried with the pion emits light of frequency νem=1.20×1015 Hz\nu_{\rm em} = 1.20\times 10^{15}\ \mathrm{Hz} in the pion's rest frame, and the pion moves directly away from a receiver at rest in SS along the line of sight. What frequency νrec\nu_{\rm rec} is received in SS?
